4-HBA

A marker compound of Ribes fasciculatum leaf and a subject of browning research

4-Hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA) is a phenolic acid of the hydroxybenzoic acid class. In cells it is made from tyrosine and serves as the starting material for the coenzyme Q10 ring, and in industry it is the parent compound of paraben esters.

It is used as a marker compound of Ribes fasciculatum (chilhaemok) leaf ingredients, and a cell and mouse study evaluating black raspberry-derived 4-HBA reported browning of white fat through the AMPK–DRP1 axis.

CategoryPhenolic acid (hydroxybenzoic acid)
OriginRibes fasciculatum leaf, black raspberry, and several other plants
In the bodyRing precursor in coenzyme Q10 biosynthesis
RoleMarker compound of the Ribes fasciculatum leaf ingredient
Level of researchCell and mouse studies (increased UCP1 and PRDM16, AMPK–DRP1-dependent)

The Cornus extract complex, which is managed using 4-HBA as a marker compound, has been commercialised by partner company ONDAM BIO as the consumer product “SANBIDAM Premium.”
