Resistant maltodextrin
A soluble dietary fibre recognised for post-meal blood glucose, triglyceride, and bowel function claims
Resistant maltodextrin is a low-molecular-weight soluble dietary fibre obtained by dextrinising starch with acid and heat and then using enzymes to remove the digestible portion. It has many atypical bonds such as α-1,2 and α-1,3, so human digestive enzymes break it down poorly.
In measurements in humans, its metabolisable energy was about 1.7 kcal (about 7.1 kJ) per gram, and in a meta-analysis of 37 randomised controlled trials it lowered the post-meal blood glucose response to carbohydrate foods in a dose-dependent manner. In Korea, it is a health functional food ingredient with notified functionalities for suppressing the rise in blood glucose after meals, improving blood triglyceride levels, and supporting regular bowel movements.
| Category | Low-molecular-weight soluble dietary fibre |
|---|---|
| Manufacturing | Starch dextrinisation → enzyme treatment → purification of the resistant fraction |
| Measurement | AOAC 2001.03 |
| MFDS | Notified ingredient — suppresses the rise in blood glucose after meals · improves blood triglyceride levels · supports regular bowel movements |
| Key evidence | Meta-analysis of 37 RCTs: about a 20% reduction in the blood glucose response with 6 g in a beverage, and about 10% when mixed into food |
Partner company ONDAM BIO has commercialised this ingredient, together with the Cornus extract complex, as the consumer liquid product “SANBIDAM Premium.”
