Loganin
The signature compound of Cornus fruit and its quality marker compound
Loganin is an iridoid glycoside in which glucose is attached to a cyclopenta[c]pyran skeleton, and it is the signature compound of Cornus fruit. In plants, it is formed by methylation of loganic acid and sits at a waypoint leading, through secologanin, to the biosynthesis of monoterpene indole alkaloids.
The Korean Pharmacopoeia sets a combined loganin and morroniside content of at least 1.2% as the quality standard for Cornus. In cell and mouse studies, suppressed expression of adipocyte differentiation genes (PPARγ, C/EBPα, and others) has been reported.
